I bought my first used piece of used furniture years ago, a little piano bench I recovered 2x and eventually repainted you can see my original post about it here. At the time didn't give much thought about the condition of the piece, I just like the lines. Luckily for me it was in good shape and I had no issues. But when buying a used piece of furniture especially a dressers, you have to dig a little deeper to make sure its a solid piece you love and that's worth your time and energy if you plan on re-finishing or painting. If your a long time reader of my blog than you remember I bought Tabari three desks, one was a dud! The second one was perfect for my nephews bedroom and finally the third dresser was a charm. You can see his refinished desk here. I've also made a mistake when looking for Avery's dresser, I found a great dresser (style-wise) but, not in good shape and I thought I could make it pretty, yeah that didn't happen. It had bad chipping veneer, not cute. 

Its taken me a a few trial and errors to know what a well made dresser really is. I thought I would share my tips after I recently came across a little dresser I loved on Craigslist, but only to realize in person it had issues. Even with its issues, it was tough for me to pass up. If you follow me on Instragram { @mrsclh } then you may have seen my picture of the dresser and read my disappointment. I'll get to more on that little dresser in a bit. 

Remember my beloved Secretary desk I found via Craigslist last year, you can see it refinished here. Just in-case your wondering aside for bad smoke damage & discoloration we were able to salvage this piece and had is restored! We visited it a few weekends ago and I almost did a cartwheel in the work room it was SO good to see something I loved and put love into being restored. Before buying my secretary desk, I asked myself some questions. Below are my top five questions I always ask myself when buying a vintage dresser. 

• Is It Solid Wood? I love finding solid wood dressers, to me if they are made well they will last forever. Solid wood is also more forgiving, you can use wood filler to fix gouges and sand down again to a smooth finish. You can also change sizes of drawer hardware easier with filler and paint. 
• Can it be Painted or Stained Easily? If the dresser is solid wood, it makes it easier to paint, and change colors or sand it down and re-finish as needed. 
• Drawer Issues? Whenever I'm looking at a dresser, I open and close all the drawers over and over to see if I spot any drawer issues. Drawers that don't close all the way, or open. Drawers that get stuck on the bottom or side tracks. It's also a good idea to consider removing the entire drawer from the dresser and see how easily it slides back into place, this is a good indication of quality. Remember your buying a dresser and using the drawers a lot they should open easily. 
• Drawer Construction? My heart skips a beat when I come across dressers with dovetail drawers. According to the 'all knowing' Wikipedia the dovetail joint design pre-dates written history! DIY Translation: its built very solid and shows quality workmanship. You can read move about those joints here  
• Does the Dresser Wobble? If the dresser is wobbly, I check to see how easy it will be to fix the dresser, maybe the legs are jusy a smidge uneven? Whenever I come across a dresser that seems unstable I give it a little shake,  that helps tell me if there's a structural issue with the dresser, maybe a crack I can't see? 

Now back to the Craigslist dresser I spotted and checked out last Friday. From the picture it looked like the dresser had so much potential. I was picturing the dresser painted or re-finished with new pulls for Avery's room or maybe even placing it in the living room. Well when I arrived at the thrift store, I saw the top was a bad laminate top.

I thought no problem I'll just replace the top with a marble remnant and use it in the living room. Next I checked out the drawers, one wouldn't close all the way and two drawers wouldn't open. I convinced my self it was no biggie that only 2 drawers worked and one wouldn't close all the way!! Yup, I was ignoring my own rules. Thankfully Hasani was with me and made me realize, I was trying to hard to make this one work and we have time to find the right pieces for our home. My goal is to make sure we only buy pieces we love, and with the Craigslist dresser it was more of a dud than potential great piece. As the old saying goes looks can be deceiving.

Ikea Step Stool Makeover

In our new kitchen we’ll have lots of cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. In the past I used the not so safe smart method of standing my kitchen counters and to reach items all the way at the top. Yup, not very smart, lol. So I did some thinking and thought its time I get a simple step stool for my kitchen, plus I think it will be great for Avery. Pretty soon he’ll be at the ‘little helper’ stage where spending time in the kitchen with mom will be lots of fun. I'm looking forward to those days, when he wants to taste and help my mix cookie batter or cake batter. I still have fond memories of waiting until my mom was done with cake batter, so I could lick the beaters. 

I looked online and found a great affordable unfinished step stool at IKEA. Perfect for me, because I planned on painting whatever step stool I bought anyways. 

If I had bought an older step stool, before I did any sanding I would have used the 3M Lead Check to be on the safe side. It was hard to choose the perfect shade to paint my stool, but with the help of a recent fabric sample from Tonic Living, I decided to go with a shade of teal green called Spa Green from Valspar. 

I gathered my 3M Advanced Abrasives sanding tools for this project.  It’s important to use the right sanding tools to get a nice smooth finish and the professional after look. Even though my wood is unfinished, it’s a must to sand it down first before priming to get the get after. After sanding I wiped down my stool and began primer it. FYI: I prefer Zinsser primer over other brands. I allowed my primer to dry for 2-3 hours before applying my first coat of paint, and before apply that first coat I light sanded using the 3M Sand Blaster 220 Grit paper (perfect for between coats)

I applied me first coat using a mini sponge paint roller then going over the step stool with a 1 inch angled paint brush. I allowed my step stool to dry for 24 hours, then once again used the 3M Sand Blaster 220 Grit paper giving lightly sanding the entire step stool. Next I applied my last coat of paint and love the results! I waited another 24 hours to let me stool dry completely.

As you know I love a glossy finish on my painted furniture, so I had Hasani spray painted a clear glossy clear coat on my step stool giving it a nice finish. Before heading out side to spray paint Hasani put on 3M safety glasses and wore the 3M respirator, which made it easy to breathe while adding the final coat of gloss of the step stool.

Here’s my finished step stool! I’m in love with it and think it will be a fun pop of color in our new kitchen. Below is a more true color in natural light 

Once under the florescent apartment lights in the kitchen the color turns more turquoise. Which I still love, in our new kitchen we'll have recessed lighting, so the colors should 'read more' true. Just thinking about putting this beauty in my new kitchen is getting me misty eyed, we still have a few months to go (early next year) before were back home. 

Remember DIY is all about using the right tools to get that professional after. I’m so happy taking the time to sand my step stool between coats of paint and before priming gave me a professional after I wanted.

Pin of the Week: Sweet Potato Tacos

One of my boards on Pinterest is labeled Inner Foodie for all the yummy meals I pin on Pinterest planning to make them one day. Keeping it real I've made about 2% of what I've pinned so far, lol. So high five to myself, because last night I made something I pinned. I texted Hasani yesterday while I was at work, seeing if he had any dinner ideas, he had none (which is annoying) So I got thinking whats in the kitchen that we already have, when it dawned on me I had two huge sweet potatoes. I bought them for homemade fries but have yet to get around to making some. Then I realized I love potato tacos (omg so good!) why not make sweet potato tacos ? I wanted to see if it had been done, before I tired my experiment, I 'Googled' some recipes and found some, then hoped on Pinterest and found more, sold!  

So for dinner last night I made Turkey Sweet Potato Tacos with crumbled feta and homemade guacamole and tomatillo salsa. The tacos were heavenly and the delicious feta gave it some bite. I lucked out and have just enough left over from lunch today! :) I'm a happy camper.

Kitchen Accessories

Hi Everyone, I'm still around and really miss blogging! I finally got a new laptop, just need internet at home, which should be installed at the apartment this weekend. But I will say blogging from Starbucks can be fun, after all I'm a Gold Card Starbucks member - lol. Hello cheap re-fills and free syrups, lol. Anyways we hope to have internet connection at home, which will make blogger much easier because I have so much to share! And you all know I'm a talker, lol. I've been doing a lot of thinking about of kitchen layout and style, I can't wait to share more ideas when its a little more settled. 

So for the time being I've been focusing on my kitchen wants, as in all the pretty & practical stuff that makes up a kitchen (accessories). I've decided this time around, I want my kitchen to be organized, pretty and me (and the fam bam) because after all the kitchen is the heart of the home. I've been collecting ideas for my kitchen and here are few accessories I'm so looking forward to enjoying in my kitchen, I've already checked off a couple of wants :)

Cooking & Baking: My number one must have kitchen accessories is more like a star of the kitchen! I'm in love with the Kitchen Aide Artisan Mixer with a glass bowel. I recently replaced the the original one I bought a few weeks before the fire and never got a chance to blog about it. I'm so happy to have one again just in time for the holidays :) I love large glass jars, they are perfect for dry goods: cereal, flour and sugar etc. I planing on buying a few again for my kitchen. I also love how versatile they are, I used one for Avery's birthday party to hold salad. A super large cutting board will also be a must, I plan to use those plastic cutting board on-top of pretty wood one for easy cleanup. I love all the spice jars at Cost Plus, they have a great selection and this time around, I'm might go with the aqua lid spice jars. I also used those for party favors for Avery's birthday party, I filled them with sprinkles. I've been wanting a dutch oven, pretty since forever, I plan on buying the one above from World Market this weekend, thanks to a 25% off coupon I have!

Dinnerware, Linens & Art: I love the clean look of white dinnerware, recently I've seen some pretty sets at Target, and Macy's, I can't wait to add a set to my new kitchen. To mix in some whimsy with all my white dinnerware, I plan on getting a few sets of salad plates from West Elm, the owl ones have me at hello. I adore cake stands, I recently bought the above cupcake stands a few days ago at Macy's on clearance, its great finding good deals. Fun colorful dish towels are also a must, to be honest I just buy a couple for looks and use plain white ones I can bleach :) I'm also looking forward to hanging artwork on my kitchen walls, I love the Etsy seller Anek, her colorful prints make me smile, I want one of her prints in my kitchen and a large one for my dining room.
