Going Bold in a Laundry Room

Friday, February 27, 2015

Sometimes, little spaces need to be bold with use of colors, patterns and textures. That sums up, how I'm feeling about my own little laundry room. It's been at a standstill for months, we were able to pretty it it up by adding large scale artwork for the HGTV Magazine Shoot, but since then it feels lackluster. I've identified whats working and what's not. I really want to give my full attention to a few areas in our home that have received little love since moving back home and one of those spaces is our laundry room. Top priority is repairing the drywall behind our artwork, I shared the fiasco of cabinet hanging in a prior post. We also need to fix our wood counter top, it got beat up during the whole ordeal. I'd honestly love to replace the counter top with butcher block, if I can find the right depth and if its budget friendly!

While the walls in my house of neutral with color layered in with lamps, colorful pillows, and rugs for my laundry room I'm gravitating toward throwing colors on the walls with either wallpaper (possibly the removable kind) or stenciling the walls and adding in artwork. Our laundry room is on the small size and also doubles as our mudroom / entrance to our backyard / kitchen and garage! There's a total of three exits and entrances into this small space, that's why I totally feel it could handle and needs all the pattern and fun it can get!
I did a quick sketch on my lunch break to share a few ideas, so you can visualize my thoughts.

Here's a quick little rundown of my plans for our laundry room that also officially doubles as a mudroom.
  • Subway Tile back-splash about washer & dryer
  • Pattern on the walls via: Stencil or Wallpaper
  • Possibly repaint the interior door, Chartreuse?
  • Recover the bench with bright cheeky fabric?
  • Add Mini Gallery or Large Frame (kids artwork, I picture a blown up artwork that one my kids made framed)
  • Install Floating Shelves above Washer & Dryer
  • Add a peg rail or hooks above bench to hold bags, umbrellas and coats. This is critical, our home has no coat closet! I know, crazy right? I actually had it removed during our re-building using the extra space to make our bathroom and kitchen larger, priorities!
  • New Rug? Maybe a natural weave rug?
These pretty and bold laundry rooms / mudroom combinations that are getting my creative energies flowing!

Our Paint Colors

Monday, February 23, 2015

One the questions I'm asked most often about our house is, what color our walls? House? Front Door? Inside of Front Door? Trim and Laundry room Door? I've shared the colors in the past, in various posts during the re-building process of our home, if your a new reader to Chic Little House read more here. I needed a blog post that was easy to find for the questions I get asked most. Let's start with the interior of our house, shall we?

Up first is our living room, I'm sharing various pictures of living room in the past few though months plus is varying light. Our living room, Dining Room walls are painted Designer Grey, all of our interior trim is Swiss Coffee by Kelly Moore, color matched by Sherwin Williams. The inside of our front door is Elephant Skin by Behr.

Originally the inside of our front door was painted white and it just felt to safe and boring for our pretty door. I painted the inside of our door Elephant Skin by Behr.

Below is the color code information for Designer Grey, I found the color at our local hardware store Meeks and the original color swatch went missing, so I'm not sure who the manufacturer of the color is. I've Googled like crazy and no luck yet.

As I mentioned earlier our dining room is also painted Designer Grey, hands down my favorite color grey.

In our laundry room, we went a subtle taupe grey shade Smooth Stone by Glidden. Here's a view of our laundry room, months ago. I have plans to overhaul this area and create a space that works for my family, sharing my plans this week on the blog. The inside of our door is Bali Bliss by Behr.

Both our boys bedroom are also painted Designer Grey, its such a nice grey that looks so good in every space.

We used Smooth Stone by Glidden in our master bedroom again.

Now for our exterior house colors. Our exterior is Pier by Behr, trim is Ultra White Sherwin Williams paint and front door is a shade of chartreuse Antiquity by Sherwin Williams.

Our laundry room door to our patio is also painted Antiquity by Sherwin Williams

As you can tell went with two main colors for our walls thoughout our house due to budget constraints during our re-build, which looking back well over a year I'm so happy it worked out that way! I love the the colors and don't see myself changing them up anytime soon, but more on that when I share my laundry room plans this week.

Avery's Valentines

Friday, February 13, 2015

Happy  Friday friends, just a quick post to share Avery's adorable Etsy Valentine's cards he passed out at his preschool parties. As I mentioned last week, Avery attends two preschools, one for speech and a private preschool. I wanted to make his Valentines celebrations specials, so I wanted to pass out two different Valentines cards for his classes.

For his private preschool, brought cuties with a tag attached saying, 'friend, Orange you glad we;re friends, Happy Valentines' I bought these darling tags from Etsy seller MilkyWay Creations. I love that the tags were an instant download and I was able to print them at home, the PDF is also set up to customize who the tags are for.

For Avery's speech preschool he bought donuts. I found this adorable Donut truck from PaperBuiltShop on Etsy. It was so much fun to put together, I made one each for my boys and filled with donuts. I made the donuts using a donut maker, my husband bought a while ago at Target.

I placed  two mini donuts (not homemade for school, per District policy's) in cupcake cake liners in bags, with donut tags from PaperandPleats. Again these were instant download and I was able to print them at home.

Both Valentines Avery passed out were a hit, more importantly he had so much fun today!

Etsy Valentine Card Roundup for Kids

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Can you believe Valentine's Day is just around the corner? I get excited for Valentines when it relates to kids. My youngest Avery attends two preschools, one for Speech & Language and a regular Private Preschool so he has two sets of preschool friends and two parties he'll be attending this year, spoiled right! But that also means more work for me, lol.  I'm really excited for Valentines celebrations this year, since Avery's speech and comprehension has improved dramatically over the year, I find with each new 'holiday' totally using that words very loosely, its a chance to add new words and concepts into his vocabulary, which is a good thing.

This year we'll be mailing Valentines cards out to family along with passing out cards to his friends at preschool and teachers.

My go to source for Valentine's cards for kids is Etsy, here's my roundup from last year. Etsy has a great selection of cards ranging from print-at-home, semi custom and custom Valentines cards for kids. Check out these darling cards from Etsy, the ones below are a mixture of print at home and having them mailed to you.

Talk about cuteness overload! I picked out sweet cards to send to family along with cards for his fellow preschoolers and teachers. If you follow me on Instagram, then you may have seen me whipping up some treats for Valentines. I'll share next week, what I'm making for Avery's preschool Valentine Celebrations, along with his cards.

Gorgeous Green and Gold Vintage Dresser

Tuesday, February 3, 2015

I'm so excited to finally share one of my favorite furniture transformation to date. I'm currently working on design project. My sister enlisted my help with in decorating her new apartment from start to finish. I'm thrilled to design a space for my sister that she'll love. In many ways this is my sisters first grown up space, where she's making a few investment pieces and going with what she really loves verses just filling up her home with items that are so-so to her. I'm sure we can all relate, that it can take time to hone in own your personal style and that's where I come in to help her create a stunning place that she'll love all on a budget.

We're starting from scratch replacing items in her space that no longer works or she no longer loves. Since she moved into a small home, storage is essential. We decided to work on her living room first, transforming a basic box into a multi-functional, a place to lounge, visit with friends, a spot to pay bills / study area for her son. My sister loves the look of our vintage campaign dresser and all the hidden storage it provides. I think in small spaces how furniture needs be both swoon worthy as it is practical. I started my search on Craigslist and within a week, I found THE dresser that I knew would look so good in her living room. My sister bought the dresser for a steal, paying only $160.00.

Since my sister can't paint the walls, we decided to go with a bold makeover. After going though several paint swatches, painting the dresser a shade of green was the perfect choice. I painted the dresser Green Grass by Behr in semi gloss. The color is such a pretty bright happy shade of green. I applied to coats of primer before painting the dresser and sanding in between coats. Since the color is so saturated, it took three coats of paint for full coverage.

Here's my sister's new dresser turned TV Stand. The lower drawers are the perfect depth to hold her DVDs, and the upper storage provides a spot for 'paper clutter.'

The hardware on this dresser is stunning. I cleaned the hardware gently using Bar Keepers Friend, removing the grime and tarnish buildup.

I'm in the process of working on some more projects for her living room, and can't wait to share some updates along with the design layout and ideas. I must confess, it was so hard to give my sister her dresser after I re-finished it, thankfully I get to visit the pretty green and gold dresser when I'm at her house.

What do you think of this vintage dresser, turned TV Stand Makeover?
