We Cut the Cable Cord

Friday, March 2, 2012

For the past six months Hasani and I have been discussing whether should cancel our Dish Network and nix cable altogether. Well, we did just that, we are officially cable free as of 2/9/12. Don't get me wrong we love TV and watching our favorite TV shows together or a part is weekly/nightly must in our household. But, because there's always a but right.

Bah Bye, dust collector

There's a few reasons why we decided to end our relationship with cable. We no longer watched very much 'live' TV, I'll explain more further in the post. We had over 120 channels, but we hardly found anything to watch on the channels. We got tired of all the re-runs, most stations would play the same 3-4 episodes over and over again. Yes, I'm talking about you Food Network, DIY Network and so on. Out of the 120 Channels, we maybe watched 15 of them and only we then didn't have excessive repeats. We also experienced frequent outages with our provider. Hasani got tired of being the designated cable 'troubleshooter' in the house. We also got annoyed when our DVR would record a show / movie and we'd watch it and it parts of the show failed to record!
The last draw for me came 2/5/12 Sunday evening, when our DVR failed to record my show Downton Abbey. How dare they! So the next morning I added up the costs we where paying for cable. Our 120 channels cost $ 24.99, but of course there were additional fees that increased our total to $ 40.00 per month. Not bad considering I have family and friends who play double that amount monthly. However, when I looked at the yearly dollar amount, the total is $ 480.00. We are paying $ 480.00 yearly for a service we almost never watch. I'm so over paying for stuff we don't need or don't use.

So now comes the questions.

What did our Tween say?

When we told broke the news to Tabari about being a cable free family, he was a little bummed. He loves watching Nick and Disney. But he can't watch TV during the school week anyways. In the end two days of the week of not being able to watch new episodes Phineas & Ferb is not a huge deal. He can still watch the show, more on that below.

Are we going to be a TV Free household? Are we still going to watch TV?

Before I cut the cable cord, I did some research on DTV.gov. I wasn't sure if we'd need to buy a converter box to watch free TV ( ABC, NBC, Fox etc ) turns out that only applies to analog TV's and since the two TVs we own are newer we don't have to buy anything extra to watch the free channels. On Wednesday night 2/8/12, Hasani unplugged our DVR, plugged our TV directly into the cable wall outlet and did a scan, and 20 free channels appeared. Most of our new channels are in HD and I can already see a big improvement in the quality (we didn't have HD before, that was an additional cable fee, of course) I noticed a few channels seem glitchy, but they're not channels I normally would watch, so that's OK. Oh another cool thing is this American Girl, now gets to watch the Canadian TV show  Steven And Chris! I never got to watch it before, now I do for free :)

Remember when I mentioned we don't watch much live TV? That's because most { 80% } of our TV viewing is watched though the Roku player. Hasani's dad gave him this great little device as a birthday present a few years back. I think we've had the Roku Player about 2 1/2 years. I call it the gift that keeps on giving. For those of you that haven't heard of a Roku, its a device that steams TV, Movies, Music and lots of other content into your TV using its built in WiFi. So you need to have Internet to use the device. You subscribe to different channels, some are a small monthly fees and some are free, just depends. The Roku only costs one time, when you buy the device that's it no monthly service fees. I hated the annoying service fee, we payed each month on DVR - that failed to record. It plugs in super easy just like your DVD player.

We subscribe to several channels and only pay for two. We subscribe to Netflix instant ( I love Netflix, been a loyal customer forever, like 5+ years) and Hulu. Netflix costs us $ 15.98 for unlimited streaming and 1 Dvd at home at a time. You can also watch Netflix instant on your computer or even your phone. We pay $ 7.99 monthly for Hulu,  we watch movies and TV shows. You can also watch Hulu online for free! We also subscribe to these free channels: Flixster { for movie previews, I also have the app on my phone } Crackle, and Pandora. I love listening to my favorite music channels on Pandora. If we want to rent movies, we visit Redbox or rent a movie on Amazon.com. The Amazon rentals stream right though our Roku player and most new releases cost $3.99 or $ 4.99 for HD and are available to view for 24 hours. The cost much cheaper than pay-per-view and quicker than going to Blockbuster, which is pretty much extinct where I live in Sacramento.

At home we have the movie 'Something Borrowed' to watch this weekend.

How Netflix Instant appears on our TV screen. There are thousands & thousands of movies and TV Shows to watch at any time.

Our channel lineup on the Roku Player

So now that we've cut the cord officially, I guess you can say we've weaned ourselves off of cable thanks to the Roku player. I'm so glad were getting rid of the bulky DVR from Dish network, which is a good thing because we don't have to stress about it fitting in our bookcases we are building soon (since the DVR is deep)

Now were only spending $ 287ish bucks a year on TV versus paying over $ 480.00 a year on cable alone. Oh, we are considering paying additional $ 79.00 a year to become Amazon Prime members. Because we'll be able to watch over 15,000 TV shows w/our Roku and get free 2 day shipping and have access to a whole bunch of books for my kindle. So if we decide to get Amazon Prime, I'll let you know if its worth it { or too similar to Netflix } most of the content needs to be different for it to be a go. It feels so good to save money on smoothing that no longer works for our household.

Do you have a cable? Love it, Hate? Are you considering cutting the cable cord like we have?

Any questions about our decision to quit cable?

Bonus question: Do you watch Downton Abbey? I'm hooked, I watched the 1st series (as the Brits call them)  on Netflix instant , it was good! I'm currently watching series two on PBS, I still have one more Episode to watch.

  2. So jealous! Besides our mortgage, cable (and it's bundle) is one of our biggest expenses. My hubby will never give up his ESPN though...

    1. Maybe one day, he'll watch ESPN online on the internet? Hasani get's his sports fix thanks to apps on his phone.

  3. WOW! I have been so out of the loop with all the wonderful options out there. My husband must have 10 sports channels (no kidding) that he frequents... even to watch games from when I was maybe 12 yrs old on some classic sports channel. I have relinquished all decisions regarding cable to him and maybe I don't want to do the math on it - I would probably cry! Good for you - keep us posted on things

    2. I so wish I could cut the cable cord too. Our cable bill is $174, internet included. Way too much though. My husband pays extra for some basketball package. He refuses to go without his sport channels. I wish I could convince him otherwise. We have Netflix too. I would be fine without cable.

    3. Men and their sports! Lucky me (and our wallets) Hasani catches up on sports with an app on his phone.

  4. I'm right there with you sister. We cut the cord about a month after we moved in after realizing we never really watched it and have loved the savings. We use hulu and a friends Netflix and it is more than enough. DA is awesome we love it!

  5. My problem is my internet provider is bundled with cable, so when I last tried to price out the difference it was cheaper to keep the whole bundle.

  6. I too found cable a waste of time and money. I cut the cord about 2 years ago and truly do not miss it. I was a slave to reality tv, still kind of am, but now I can just watch it online for way less and avoid all the commercials. Also, I'm a movie junkie, so having Netflix is what I mainly use my tv for.

    1. High Five! I'm guilty of loving realty TV too :)

I swear having Netflix magically appear on my TV (thanks to Roku) is the best thing since sliced bread! lol

  7. I hate my cable and we were actually going to sign up for direct tv today but I am going to do some more research on some of the things you mentioned here, I love saving bucks:)! Thanks for sharing dear!

  8. Wow, I would die of happiness if our cable was $40 a month! Ours is over $100 and then an extra $50 for internet. Time Warner Cable in WI is the BIGGEST ripoff. But I can't take the plunge yet, I love HGTV too much!

    1. What, shut the front door your internet is $50 a month? Whoa, ours is $ 19.99 a month from at&t - I can be on my laptop and watch Netflix on my TV (and that's with just basic wireless speed)

      Boo! on Time Warner Cable

  9. We cut the cable cord last summer, and do not miss it one bit. We also got rid of Netflix because we were keeping our dvd's for about 6 weeks before sending them back for another, and we never used their instant watch. Between cancelling cable + netflix, we're saving $1300/yr! Crazy how much it adds up!

    1. Hi Darnetha, I'm so sorry you were laid off, I hope the economy starts improving soon its so unreal how everything has been the last few years.

I hope the Roku or watching Hulu online or though the Roku helps save some extra money on expenses, best wishes

  11. $1032...that's how much I spend yearly on cable. UGH! I've been trying to decide if I want to cut the cord or not. I'm going to do some serious research this weekend because these random/unnecessary bills add up! I also need to check out that Roku...never heard of it and it sounds great!
I'm also going to cut off my home phone because it's a waste. We only need it for the alarm, and I'm going to upgrade to the wireless alarm so that I can get rid of that bill as well.
Now if only I could somehow pay less for the cell phones :-\
    Thanks for the info/tips!

    1. Lauren, if you have any questions about the Roku send me email :) We really love ours!

I made some changes to our home phone too (we've kept it for the alarm, and for emergencies just in case) We now have measured service which means unlimited incoming calls and a were allowed a few outgoing calls, we almost NEVER use our home phone, but measured rate helps us save.

We have Sprint cell phones I love that our minutes / internet & texting is unlimited

Best wishes on whatever you decide

  12. Wow, good for you. I don't know if we can cut our cable(we are tv junkies) but I've been telling my husband to cut our netflix. It takes us weeks sometimes months to return movies. Yikes! I've never heard of Roku before, I'd have to check it out!

  13. Thanks so much for posting this. We spend way too much money on cable and I've been trying to figure out how to cut the bill down. This may work. I'm off to do a little more research...

  14. Congratulations! We cut our cable almost 2 years ago this summer and it's been great. I maintained Netflix for a while and went from 3 to 1 to none because we've doing so many other things besides watching TV. When we do want to catch something we can find it online. We'd much rather have the internet than cable any day!

  15. Hi there. This comes at the perfect time. We are in the process of switching from UVerse to Comcast as we speak. Our installation is scheduled for Tuesday. I'm thinking if I find a better much less expensive option that appointment may get canceled.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I've never heard of Roku. I'm so with you on the fact that there's never much to watch even though we get like 400 channels-reruns of the same episode of Property Brothers, for instance drives me batty. Glad you found a good alternative.

  17. I know a family that has Roku and they love it! I'm thinking about investigating a bit more. I switched from Comcast to DirectTv to save money. I also live by the library so I frequently get DVDs from there. Saving money is always a beautiful thing. And you get to discover other ways of having fun as a family.

  18. It's important to cut costs when you can. We went from cable tv, at and t phone and lapconnect to everything on At&t last year. We are on one year contract. I saw an vonage commercial and going to check again. We go to the dollar show and do not purchase dvds. Good luck.

  19. Thank you for this article. You have listed some very good alternatives for cable/satellite.
I cut cable about 3 years ago and I don't really miss it (okay...maybe HGTV but that's it)(savings: $600.00/yr). Between YouTube, Hulu, and the channel websites, I stay entertained. I, also, cut home phone service last February (savings: $360/yr). I just wasn't using it. I decreased my Time Warner Road Runner internet(decreased the speed)from $49.00 to 30.95 (savings: $216.60/yr). I have no problem with downloading/streaming shows.

  20. I also have Roku brought mine from QVC. I haven't had it long about 4 months now and I love it. I hated my cable. I want to buy it for my mom to. I have the Roku XD box. Theirs 4 different boxes I think.

  21. We are cable-free, too. Sometimes I miss HGTV, I'm not going to lie. But, it's not worth the money. And they constantly show reruns.

We have the streaming Netflix, and even that sometimes goes unused. We may suspend the service for the summer when it's nice.

I'm really interested in the Roku. Never heard of it, but sounds like the best of both worlds!

And - I'm a Downton Abbey watcher, too. I watched the first season on Netflix and the rest on the Internet.

    1. Good Question! At this time not that I'm aware of, however I noticed Netflix has added a bunch of classic movies to their instant lineup recently.

I wonder if you could watch TCM online? That might be a good alternative and then you would be able to cancel cable and keep the extra money

  23. Oh my gosh this is so funny because we are considering doing the same thing. Our DISH plan is up in June and I can't wait to cancel it. We're also thinking of getting the Ruku or a Wii and Netflix. We just don't watch enough.

I'm so glad to hear you got the local channels for free, that's what we are worried about. I can't wait to watch Downtown Abbey!

  24. Congratulations! This is my current set up http://goo.gl/pLFWJ
I cancelled my service back in 2008. I haven't paid for TV in over 5 years now. Trust me, you'll not regret it. I watch sports and news live (OTA) and stream and download everything else. Within 6 months you'll have paid for everything an the rest is saved money in your pocket.

  25. The way I cut the cord was very similar. I use a Roku box and have a Hulu Plus membership. A couple of the differances, I use a Mohu Leaf antenna (I love it!) to get OTA signals, a Tivo Premiere box ($20 a month, but for me the convenience of a DVR makes it well worth it). BTW, I'm a Prime member and would recommed it very highly!
