Now I'm thinking over the replacing our wood and glass coffee table. We bought the coffee table a few months after we moved in our home and while its still loved in our home. It seems to be less practical now that we have a baby. You see Avery is a little explorer and our coffee table has two areas to explore bottom and top, which is fine. Lucky the coffee table is round so there's no hard corners to worry to much about, I just worry about him bumping his head or mouth on the wood surface.
So for the past couple of weeks, I've been thinking a large-ish square or rectangle ottoman would be a nice addition to our living room. If we end up going the ottoman route, I still plan on using the ottoman similar to our coffee table, with a tray on top. A tray for me on a coffee table or ottoman is a must, a super quick way to lift items out of the way of little hands.
Here's a few looks I dig

I'm still on the fence about an Ottoman vs. a Coffee Table.
What do you prefer an Ottoman or a Coffee Table?

We used to have a massive ottoman (someone slept on it once) but now we have a coffee table and I will never go back.
ReplyDeleteI like not having to think about it when I go to set my coffee down. I like being able to wipe up spills (mostly beer) and know the spill is gone and not seeping into the depths of the ottoman.
I know it's a personal preference, but this is one lady who's been so pleased with a coffee table over an ottoman ;)
Ali, you had me lol :) about the beer :) I forgot to mention in my post, that spills is a concern of mine with two kiddos and a clumsy husband spills happen!
DeleteThanks for your input!
Ottoman with a tray on top for drinks. Provides extra seating when needed, you can easily change the fabric out when you get bored etc. I add a placemats on mine when guests come to eat as well. I haven't had one spill so far.
ReplyDeleteMy vote is an ottoman with storage! That being said, I've never had one so take my vote with a grain of salt. :)
ReplyDeletewe have a really large ottoman in our family room and the only downside is that the kids jump on it ALL THE TIME!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and your style.
ReplyDeleteI don't own a coffee table or an ottoman but I wonder if a non-fabric ottoman would be suitable. I'm thinking along the lines of

I think it'd be softer than wood and perhaps more resistant to spills, but I don't have any experience with this material. I've also seen similar ottomans in darker colors as well.
Ottoman...way cooler than a traditional coffee table...
ReplyDeleteOttoman all the way. I am still lusting over the Ballard Designs one that I will own one day, I love it so much, I don't even have a coffee table.
ReplyDeleteYou know my stand here... Ottoman! I want a big square one so I'm thinking of going custom - for the right price!
ReplyDeleteOh this is a tough one! I love the ottoman look especially with a tray on top. Also it's nice to have a place to kick your feet up. Then again a coffee table is less to worry about and still can look nice. I think an ottoman with a playful pattern that could disguise minor spills and everyday wear and tear would be a good option. Nothing too light colored unless you put a piece of glass on top to cover the whole surface.

I think that with small children like in your home an ottoman might be nice to avoid accidents-I have a small scar near my right eye from falling on the edge of our coffee table when I was a pre-schooler.
ReplyDeleteOttoman! Both options have merit, but with a little one (my guy is just a wee bit younger than your little man), it makes life a little easier. If he wants to practice standing or just roll around, the ottoman has built in cushion. We have a nice big sturdy tray on ours to allow us to continue to use it like a coffee table.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of the ottoman as a coffee table. I think it would be nice with a piece of glass on top so that the fabric can be protected. Or you could just scotch guard it.

I love the coffee table in your living room. We have a leather ottoman in the family room, which doubles as extra seating when needed!
ReplyDeleteI think the ottoman would be a better choice with a baby around (for peace of mind). You probably could even find one with additional storage built-in.

Love the options!!
ReplyDeleteAfter looking at your current table, why not sew an elastic stretch cusion for the top of that, and remove it when people want to eat/drink on top?? If it's sturdy enough for sitting it could really work.
ReplyDeletelove that tuffed one something bad...
