Prepping for Our Thanksgiving

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

I planned to share my Thanksgiving table before the day actually took place, but sadly this whole time change thing is messing my evening blogging up, when it comes to taking pictures. I  plan on taking lots of pictures of our table to share on Monday (pinky promise) Our Thanksgiving will be a combination of family style dining and buffet. Our turkey will be on display in the kitchen, along with appetizers, few sides and drinks (wine, champagne, sparkling apple cider) On the table we'll have our bread, water, cranberry sauce and a small side served family style on the table.

I'm really looking forward to Thanksgiving!! I'm overjoyed to have Thanksgiving in our home this year. Last year at this time, our house hadn't even began the re-building phase and we had no idea when we'd move back into our home. Being in our home again and celebrating our first Thanksgiving home is more meaningful, since most years we head to our families house to celebrate.

Instead of going with traditional Thanksgiving colors like rusts, golds and cranberries, I decided to take a more modern approach and use colors that are already will our home. I decided to pair our everyday white dinnerware with pretty white rimmed aqua salad plates. Our dinnerware will sit on top of sliver chargers.

Modern Thanksgiving Table Ideas

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Thanksgiving has been on my mind since early October. This year I want our Thanksgiving to be extra special for two reasons. It's our first Thanksgiving since moving back into our home and our first time celebrating in our home, we usually head to a family members house. I'm excited to create a lovely thanksgiving table that's a reflection of my family. Thankfully I refinished our vintage dining room table in time to enjoy it for Thanksgiving, super excited to put a lovely table setting together.  When I was first putting together ideas, I thought a Woodland Theme Thanksgiving would be so sweet and it is a sweet theme. However, I'm not really a theme person unless its Halloween or Christmas then bring on those themes!

I consider myself more of a modern girl and for the reason decided a Modern Thanksgiving for our home is perfect and more us. Using colors that I already love, with pieces I love and a style I love modern simplicity. I've pulled together a few ideas I'm loving for a Modern Thanksgiving table. I love that modern doesn't have to mean cold and inviting, for me it means less fuss and a more youthful spin on traditional.

Vintage Dining Table Makeover

Monday, November 18, 2013

Back in September I found the perfect vintage dining room table for our dining room on Craigslist. I love shopping Craigslist, Thrift Stores, Consignment Stores etc. for furniture and accessorizes for unique pieces for our home. After seeing the ad I new the table would look amazing in our home. I loved its oval shape, pedestal base, curvy legs, and its size. We're finally able to seat six in our small dining room, which is huge huge!! In our dining room before we were only able to seat four people and it always felt on the small side. We bought the vintage dining table and six chairs for $200, we only wanted the table but the seller didn't want to separate the set [don't you hate when that happens!] Before buying the table we already purchased for chairs, for the time being the chairs will be in our garage and I'll refinish in them future.

But before I share those pretty afters, here's a reminder of what our vintage dining room table looked like when we brought it home. The picture below is from the Craigslist seller.

Everything from A to Z

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

On Monday a shared an update on Avery's toddler room, finally added a Flor Rug in his space. In addition I also upgraded how his books are now displayed. Over the weekend, I stopped into a consignment store near our house just looking around hoping to find furniture to fill some empty spaces in our home. I didn't find any furniture, but I did find cute bookends for Avery's room. He currently has two bookcases in his room, one dedicated to his board books and the other one for his toys. I was keeping less toddler friendly books on the toy bookcase on a shelf [read: the ones that tear easy & pop-up books] but there were a little too in his gasp and I was afraid he'd tear into them before he learned to be more gentle with his books. Plus most of them were gifts from Grandma and I wanted to keep them extra safe. When I saw the bookends, I knew they were the perfect solution for his books.

Only one problem with the book ends, they are dark brown not exactly happy colorful bookends I was picturing for Avery's room. Have no fear, spray paint to the rescue! I'm not a huge fan of spray paint [at least me doing the spray painting!] because I get drips etc. This time around, I used a sheet of plastic and spray painted the bookends indirect sunlight and took my time doing thin coats of paint, allowing the color to build over time.

Behind the Closed Door

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

For the past few months, I've been thinking about painting our front door. Not the outside of our door, I adore its shade of  chartreuse, but painting the inside of our front door. Currently the inside of our door is white, as is all our interior doors and I love me some white doors. But one thing I'm not loving is the inside of our front door, it collects finger prints and dirt and seems to blend in with the trim etc.

I love the style of the Craftsman door on our rancher, and all its pretty pane windows. Frankly its just too pretty to blend in and look blah. With that said, I decided to paint the inside of our front door a deep shade of grey. We painted our walls Designer Grey [love how fitting the paint color name is!] which is a soft shade of grey with no funky undertones, I though a deep grey would look amazing with our wall color trim and our on Craftsman style front door. Here's our front door before painting the inside a deep grey.

We chose Elephant Skin by Behr one of the three shades of grey we were considering painting the exterior of our house. At the time we felt the color wasn't dark enough from our exterior, but inside it works perfectly.

Making a Rug with Flor

Monday, November 11, 2013

Months ago, I shared my ideas for a rug for Avery's room. I thought a grey and white stripe rug for his bedroom would be perfect, I searched high and low, but wasn't able to find exactly what I was looking for. Since we have hardwood floors, I wanted the rug in his room to have some cushion like carpet or a nice wool rug has. After coming coming up empty handed, I decided to try Flor tiles. I've used them before in our entry for Halloween [was so hoping they'd bring back the Holiday line!! maybe next year?] I ordered a few samples, read more about them here and decided to go with the line Heaven Sent using the colors Titanium & Bone.

I've been patiently waiting months for the Flor Heaven Sent line to go on sale, oh yes this girl can wait months if needed to buy something on sale or with free shipping, lol. Finally months later, they were on sale for 25% off with free shipping! I decided to go with a 12 Flor tiles that creates a 5x7 rug. When the tiles arrived I realized four more tiles would make for the perfect rug size for his room, I re-ordered just in time to still get the savings. Here's Avery's room without his new Flor rug.

Out My Back Door

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

I bought ceramic hanging planters years ago from Ikea and they used to hang outside our front porch filled with flowers. I loved those planters and so happy there were able to be saved after our house fire. I decided to hang one outside our back door of our house that leads to our patio. On the other side of our front door is our mudroom & laundry room that leads to our ktichen and dinning area. I found the back hanging hook from Home Depot for $3.99, I loved its curves and the fact it looked a little more modern and simple then most plant hanging hooks.

Pin of the Week

Friday, November 1, 2013

Happy Friday all, I hope everyone had a fun fantastic Halloween evening! We had a blast last night, passing out candy and taking Avery trick or treating, you can see my Instragram pictures from last night here. This year we kept of Halloween decorating simple (just pumpkins, see our prior Halloween decor here and here) Next year, I'm doing it BIG. Too bad I couldn't take the day off just to shop those sales lol.

Now for the Pin of the Week, making your own Chalkboard Printable. I love the look of these prints and now with the Holidays just around the corner [Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Years] its the perfect time to make one for your home.
