The other day I was texting Shavonda about my love of Crepe Myrtles and plan to add one in our backyard. When she mentioned our local energy provider SMUD might offer Crape Myrtles for FREE as part of their Shade Tree Program. As luck would have it they do!! SMUD works along side of Sacramento Tree Foundation offering free tress to promote shade, improve air quality and add beauty.
I'm already dreaming of the perfect spot, pending SMUD approval, a Community Forester comes out to our property and helps us find the best spot in our yard for your tree to thrive and provide shade. We plan on planting our tree in early fall. I'm so excited!

Right now I'm leaning towards a pale pink or fuchsia Crape Myrtle for our backyard. I'm already getting giddy or the though of snipping a few branches and enjoying the blooms in vase in our homes.
Do you love Crape Myrtles as much as I do?

Wow, how awesome is this! Free trees?!?! I wish they would that around here too.
ReplyDeleteJulia, its such a great program! I was surprised they offer so many varieties and even come out to your home and help take the guess work out of 'Where to Plant the Tree'
DeleteSacramento is also on the Tree City USA list, so I think that's another reason why they encourage homeowners to plant trees! Hopefully more cities will start offering Free trees to residents! :)
I have 5 Crepe Myrtles in my backyard along the back fence. They were there when I purchased my home 4 years ago this August. They start blooming in June. I love them.
ReplyDeleteGreat you can get them for free too! :)
Oh my, you must have an amazing view!! I love that they bloom and stay that for such a long time!! :)
DeleteJust another reason I love our city! It's going to look so amazing in your new backyard, Katrina. We have on in our front yard and I love the hot pink blooms. They are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for checking out SMUD for me!! I'm so freaking excited :) lol
DeleteThat's so wonderful that you can get them for free! I purchased 2 small trees(bushes) from HD a few summers ago and while they have plenty of leaves on them there's not a bloom in sight! LOL!
ReplyDeleteHopefully they'll start blooming next year?? Crossing my fingers for you!
DeleteI love Crepe Myrtles! They are so pretty. That program is amazing I wish we had something like that here. Of course I will be on the look out, I need a tree in my front yard for shade.
ReplyDeleteDarnetha, I did see some Crape Myrtles in Costco off all places! At good prices.
DeleteCrape Myrtles are my favorite! They're everywhere in Austin too and I really want one or a couple for our backyard. Great choice! You're so lucky you can get it for free. Your post made me wonder about my area and sure enough, they do give out free trees here but only on a first come first serve basis and no crape myrtles :(
ReplyDeleteThanks awesome that the City of Austin also has a tree program! Hopefully there's some pretty trees on the list that you like? Maybe they'll add giving Crape Myrtles to their list?? Crossing my fingers :)
DeleteAwesome program. I sell crape myrtles in Texas via www.CrapeMyrtleGuy.com. We love crapes in Texas.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful tree.
