For inspiration, I began my buffet table search at Pottery Barn by checking out their console tables aka sofa tables. I really like console tables that have a drawer and at least two shelves on bottom. I think two shelves would be esstenial in our dining room. On the top shelf I would keep wine bottles and wine glasses / champagne glasses. Since we have limited counter space in our kitchen, having wine bottles in the dining room would free up valuable space. On the bottom shelf I would have cake stands, cook books and vases. I really like the two console tables from Pottery Barn both classic looking { just the wrong color }
Although larger than want I want in our dining room, I love the look of this open storage.

As you know I love projects and nothing beats finding a great deal, so I've been stalking Craigslist and trolling thrift stores in hopes of finding the perfect console table for our dining room. If I come across a credenza, that would also be a good thing, it would we longer and most likely have a middle door with shelves. I would remove the door and keep wine bottles inside there. Oh the possibilities! Now just need to find the right piece for our dining room on the cheap.
So what to do think about Open Storage vs. Closed storage in a dining room? What kind of storage does your dining room have? And why do I keep adding projects to my to do list.

Open storage is so pretty - as long as you don't have a little kid or a little animal, I guess! :) Hey, Knock off wood has a plan for the first pottery barn console table... might want to check that out if you're in any way interested in building your own..
ReplyDeleteI guess I prefer a little of both. If you have open storage you really have to be careful not to overcrowd or it will just look cluttered. I also hate dust. You will have to remember to rinse and dry everything before you use it. I like to have some closed storage to cram everything into that guests can't see and I like to have some glass doors so you can see pretty dishes without the dust.

Elisa, I'm so excited to hear that Knock Off Wood has plans for the Pottery Barn console, table this is a project I would love to DIY!! Going to check out the plans :)
ReplyDeleteAmy - I agree a mix of closed and open storage is a plus. That's way a drawer is a must for me! Perfect spot to stash items
i can understand why you would want to go for this option, but for me, i like everything tucked away and out of reach for my son:)
ReplyDeleteI'm in need of more storage space. I love the open look, depending on the style of the kitchen and any windows in the kitchen, I think open storage needs windows. Since you have one, it will make the area look larger. I am currently looking for a great cabinet for my formal dining room. I have our china cabinet in the kitchen (wierd, I know) it was soo offensive in the formal dining area- I know you will find something fab!
ReplyDeleteI love the look and idea of open storage in a dining room. If you eat in your dining room daily and use everything, it gets cleaned regularly and can be part of the decor.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of open storage! Pretty dishes are just too pretty to be hidden away. But I would have a dust problem because we do not use that stuff everyday and it would be a pain to keep clean. However, since I am a girl that goes for look over function, I would still go for it!
