Paint Tip

Thursday, May 27, 2010

The paint cans in our garage are getting out of hand and it's getting harder for me to remember what color has been used on what. A few weeks back I had to do touch up paint in our bedroom and could not remember what color grey we paint our bedroom! I actually started doing the touch up paint with the wrong color! So I had to rummage though our ever growing paints and finally found our bedroom paint color. I decided one of the things I need to tackle of the summer is our paint paint cans.

I found a really good tip from Martha Stewart of course. Martha suggests using paint stirrings. After stirring paints, let stirrers dry, then write the color and room on each. To keep them well organized she also suggests making a whole at the end of each and using twine to secue them together. Most likely I'll use a large metal ring and keep them safely in my yet to get started on office. Wal-Mart sells paint stirrers for around thirty cents each, so I'll pick up a bunch there to get me started.

I also plan on making simple labels to place on the paint can after its been used. The labels will include the same information as the paint stirrer swatch with the addition of the paint formula. I have seen other blogs buy new paint cans to store their paints, however I want to do this as thrifty as possible.

Do you already have a system to keep your paint cans organized and know what color you used and where? Please share you tips.

  1. The paint stirrers - a great idea! More green than throwing them away, that's for sure...

Also - Another idea I have - I plan to get baby jars to put all the paints in to be used for touch-ups. I hate lugging heavy paint cans and stirring the whole thing just to brush a few strokes on the walls as needed. I hope it works...

  2. O I love this idea! That Martha, she's the best. I don't really have any ideas that we use. But I don't have a lot of colors that are close in color.

  3. I love that idea! I just have all of our colors written down in a Word document, but I keep meaning to do something like this. I also want to put paint in glass jars to have on hand for little touch ups. Another thing to add to the to-do list!

  4. I love the paint colors in small jars idea for touch ups! Good thinking. I think mason jars would work very well, there are super affordable

  5. Have you seen the way Sherry & John over at YHL organize their paints!? It was genius! They went out and bought a bunch of empty cans and filled them with their leftover paint and printed out labels with the paint name & where it was used and then put a dab of the colour on the labels. I love matching stuff... so it won me over!! We hope to do it with all of our paint too...

  10. Just found you via Home To Three Duncan Boys...I have no system and the cans are a mess. I'll need to try yours! Mrs. Limestone also has a beautiful system. She puts the paint in clear jars and ties on pretty labels with the paint information. They are almost pretty enough to showcase!

  11. Great idea with the paint stirrers on a piece of twine! Since I just recently discovered the magic of painting things, we are starting to acquire lots of paint cans/samples. I'll need to come up with a system soon!

  12. Cute idea! I started pouring paint into smaller jars after seeing it on someones blog. We always have a ton of jars that are washed for recycling. The nicer glass jars get set aside for flower vases and future projects and the plastic peanut butter jars are used for paint (that way I can throw them in a bin or box and not have to worry about jars breaking). Also I hate going to our basement so I store them in our hall closet which means I actually touch up our walls when it's needed.
