Saturday Morning Thrifty Finds (2)

Monday, March 15, 2010

Don't you love coming across an item when your not looking for anything in particular? On Saturday on the way to do errands, my family and I stopped at a three family yard sale. I was browsing around and not seeing anything that really caught my eye, until I spotted a lamp. Not just any lamp, but the perfect desk lamp for my sons room. It's an old school 'Bankers Lamp' with a glass shade. I picked it up, it was super heavy and nice, just needed cleaning and a new look. The best part of it, I snagged the lamp for $5.00 and it works! Lamps Plus, is selling a similar lamp for $79.99! I so scored a bargain for my sons upcoming bedroom re-do.

Now that you've seen the lamp, I have a few ideas to make it more youthful. I'm going to spray paint the base of the lamp a bright color or antique oiled bronze color and I want to spray paint the glass shade a glossy white of frost the glass shade to tone down the green. BUT is possible to paint the glass shade? So if you have painted a glass shade I need help...can this be done?

  1. I am tempted to say yes. You can spray paint just about anything these days. Let us know what you find out. $5, such a deal!

  2. Have I mentioned I love your signature? I adore the fact that it's customized to match the rest of your blog. Really, this place looks amazing.

I totally think you can do it! Rustoleum spray paints say they can go on anything, and I want to say it specifically names glass. I like the idea of a frosted white. Good thinking! It'll look so cute!

Fabulous find! Can't wait to see it finished and in your son's room!

  3. i definitely think you would have to use something that makes allowances for the heat (i hate to say heat resistant, but you get the idea), so that might limit your choices. do some googling and see what you find.

  4. Great find! I'm not sure about painting the glass, but I don't see why you couldn't!

  5. That looks like a quality lamp!! I've never tried painting a glass lamp shade. I wonder if there is a certain type of spray paint just for that? I kind of agree with Dayka that it might be worth looking into something heat-resistant if the lamp's going to be on often... but what do I know! :)

  8. Oh my gosh, what a great lamp! I'm sure whatever you do to it, it'll look awesome but it's pretty much awesome as is. I especially love how it looks when turned on.

I've spray painted glass vases and it worked fine. I would just be extra careful and use really light layers of paint. When the sunlight shines through the vases I did, I can see a couple of spots where the paint was a little thick.

I'm excited to see what you have in store for it!
